THIS JUST IN: SO WE’RE REALLY DOING THIS?

OPINION & COMMENTARY

East Davidson High School ended its varsity soccer season after a video showed players on a team bus responding to a racist prompt. And yeah… I have thoughts.

Before I get into that, watch the video for yourself.

WATCH THE VIDEO

The prompt was essentially: “Attention everybody! Make noise if you hate n****r[s]!”

Let’s call it what it was: a racist prompt. The N-word is an anti-Black racial slur, and here it was used to get a group of students to respond to a statement expressing hatred toward Black people.

And they responded. That’s the part that gets me.

I’m not going to call every kid on that bus a lifelong racist because of one video. I don’t know these students personally. But I can absolutely say the behavior was racist and completely unacceptable.

These students were representing their school. So I understand why the school took it seriously and ended the season. The team was 17–4 and headed toward the state playoffs.

But here’s my question: what happens after the punishment?

Accountability matters. So does teaching. Canceling a season can end a season, but it doesn’t automatically change a mindset.

That’s where the real work starts.

This is REAL B’s opinion and commentary. It is not presented as straight-news reporting.
